Icon Workshop- Painting and Prayer with Sr Annette Lawrence
A prayerful experience of painting an icon of your own.
Each day includes input about icons, a meditation on an icon and painting your own icon with plenty of instruction and demonstrations. All are welcome – artistically talented or not!
Icons are more than pictures, they are windows to the sacred and writing an icon can be a spiritual journey. This workshop takes us from a bare board to a finished Icon; painting with prayer, reflections on Icons and practical instructions. Artistic ability is NOT essential!
Although they come from the orthodox tradition, Icons have something to say to all Christians. They are much more than an art form; they are actually a theological expression in an age-old language. Their primary purpose is to enable a face-to-face encounter with a holy person or a sacred event. They take us beyond themselves into the mystery of the Incarnation and the salvation of humankind. For me, painting an icon is a journey. While we work on icons, they also work on us. As we work from dark to light, from chaos to beauty, God can work in us to make our darkness into light, the chaos in our lives and world into the images of His Beauty. During this week we will journey from a bare board to a completed icon, learning and praying as we paint
Sr. Annette Lawrence DMJ -is a member of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph. She has been writing icons for 20 years and leading workshops for 15. Having been a secondary school maths teacher, she then studied for an MA in Spirituality in Ireland. She has offered retreats and spiritual direction since 2001 alongside Congregation ministry in various roles. Since 2008, she has led many Icon workshops in various Centres in the UK as well as at the Mary and Joseph Centre, California and for DMJ in Rome and Uganda.
